Motorola, Inc. today announced that the company has been selected to supply broadband infrastructure technology to three cable network operators in China.

By 2006, Motorola optical technology will power the expansion of broadband services–including digital cable, digital radio, and high-speed Internet access–to over 4 million residential and business customers throughout three cities in China.

For each of these awards, Motorola will be providing the optical solutions to prepare these networks to support the introduction of digital cable, high-speed data and interactive services in the future. Under the terms of the separate agreements, Motorola will supply all electronic equipment for the hybrid fiber-coax networks, including the Motorola OmniStar GX2 optical head-end platform, fiber electronic transmitters and receivers, and optical nodes to: Changchun CATV, projected to pass over 2.7 million residential subscribers and 100,000 business customers in Changchun City by 2006; Kunming CATV, projected to pass over 800,000 residential subscribers in Kunming City by 2006; Qiqihar CATV, projected to pass over 400,000 residential subscribers in Qiqihar City by 2006.

The Motorola OmniStar GX2 supports advanced HFC networks and accepts 16 plug-n-play application modules in 4 RU chassis for a high-density platform. Motorola’s new 1550nm products are based on technology from the synchronous acquisition. The platform can be monitored and controlled locally through a Web browser interface or through a network management system using Ethernet-based SNMP.

The Motorola Broadband Communications Sector provides a scalable, integrated end-to-end system for the delivery of broadband services that keeps consumers informed, entertained and connected. Its technology enables network operators and retailers to create and execute on new business opportunities by providing innovative products and services to the home. Customer-responsive design and manufacturing expertise further contribute to the company’s position as the world’s leading supplier of digital cable set-tops and cable modems.
