China’s Telecom Operators See User Declines In December 2008

All of the three major Chinese telecommunications operators have published their operating statistics for December 2008, of which, China Mobile was still the largest winner with a stable growth in user number, while rivals China Unicom and China Telecom saw serious declines in their respective fixed network businesses.
Online Payment Available For China Unicom Fixed Line Users

Chinese telecommunications operator China Unicom has announced that after launching online enquiry and payment functions for mobile phone users across China, the company has now opened a fixed line payment function that is available in 10 northern Chinese cities and provinces, including Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Jilin, Shandong, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia and Henan.
China Unicom Publishes Operating Statistics For November 2008

China Unicom has published its operating statistics for November 2008, which state the number of its GSM mobile phone users increased by 996,000 during the month, reaching an accumulated number of 133 million users.
China Unicom Acquires Fixed Lines In 21 Southern Chinese Provinces

China Unicom (Hong Kong) Limited has announced plans to invest CNY6.43 billion to acquire the fixed-line business in Tianjin and 21 southern Chinese provinces from its major shareholders China Unicom Group and China Netcom Group.
MIIT: Revenue Of Mobile Phone Rises While Fixed-line Declined In H1 2008

According to statistics released by the Monitoring and Coordination Bureau of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China, from January to July 2008, the revenue of China’s mobile communications industry and data communications industry increased by 16.2% and 40.4%, respectively, over last year while the fixed-line business decreased by 6.8%.

CPPCC Deputy Calls For Canceling Monthly Fixed Communications Fee

Chai Baocheng, a deputy to the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, says that charging monthly fees for fixed telephones is a monopolization of the communications industry and he suggests that the fee should soon be canceled.
